Do you need a nail technician license in Florida?
Working as a nail technician in Florida does require a state license, but the process is shorter than most people assume: 180 hours of school and no state exam.

The 180 hours
The DBPR requires 180 hours of training in a nail specialty program at a Florida-licensed cosmetology school, 90 of which are supervised, hands-on practice doing real services.
No exam, but an HIV course
Unlike other beauty trades, Florida doesn't require a state exam for nail specialist registration: you complete the hours and apply directly. An HIV/AIDS course of at least 4 hours is required, completed within two years before you apply.
What the process actually costs
Between the application, the initial registration, and the unlicensed-activity fee, the process runs about $75 total. You need to be at least 16, or hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
After you're licensed
Renewal requires 10 hours of continuing education every two years. Separate from your individual license, the salon where you work or that you open needs its own DBPR establishment permit.
doubts
What people usually ask
Can I do nails in Florida with no license?
No, it's one of the few beauty trades with a mandatory state license, whether you work for someone or on your own.
Can the 180 hours be done online?
They have to be in person at a Florida-licensed school: the supervised hands-on portion can't be replaced by an online course.
How long does the whole process take?
Depends on the school, but many 180-hour programs finish in a few weeks full-time. It's one of the shortest license processes among the beauty trades.
