The 2026 Google core updates hit home service businesses hard

Google shipped two major core updates in 2026, in March and in May, and both hit home service businesses especially hard, alongside legal and healthcare. What moved the most: sites built on templated location pages that just swap in a different city name, with nothing genuinely local written for that city.

What started carrying more weight

After the March update, a complete Google Business Profile became more tightly linked to showing up in the three-result local pack, and half-filled profiles dropped disproportionately. Review recency and how often the owner responds also started weighing more than sheer review count alone.

The May update, described as the most volatile of the year, kept punishing generic content: vague advice, recycled wording, pages with no original insight. Businesses with missing reviews, inconsistent details between their website and their profile, or thin Business Profiles lost ground too.

What to do if your site is one of those

If your "plumbing in Hialeah" page is the same as your "plumbing in Miami" page with the city name swapped, that's exactly the pattern this update is pushing down. Genuinely local content per city, a Business Profile with current hours and category, and replying to reviews the week they come in are the three things this update actually rewards.
