Which Google category to use

The primary category is the heaviest decision on your entire Google listing, and it's the one most people get wrong. It decides which searches you compete in: a business listed as "General contractor" doesn't compete for "plumber near me" even if it does plumbing every day. Finding the right one means looking at what the top three use when you search your trade, and it changes in two minutes.

What the category actually does

Google uses the primary category to decide which lists your business goes into.

If someone searches "plumber," Google shows businesses whose primary category is "Plumber." If yours is something else, you can still appear, but behind everyone and at a disadvantage.

It's one of the few things on the listing that changes in two minutes and shows an effect within weeks.

How to find the right one

**1. Search your trade the way a customer would**, in incognito, from your phone. "Plumber Hialeah," "nails near me."

**2. Open the listings of the top three.** The primary category appears under the business name.

**3. If all three use the same one, that's yours**, provided it genuinely describes what you do.

That's it, and almost nobody checks.

The most common mistakes

**Picking something too broad.** "Contractor" instead of "Roofer." Broad looks like it covers more and in practice competes in no specific search.

**Picking the category for what you want to do** rather than what pays the bills today. If 80% of your work is repair, your category is repair.

**Choosing by which English name sounds best.** Choose by what the top-ranked listings use.

**Changing it every month.** Every change resets part of the trust Google had built. Pick well and leave it.

Secondary categories

You can add several, and here it pays to be generous but deliberate.

**Add the ones you genuinely do.** A plumber can add "Water heater installation" or "Drainage service."

**Don't add ten you don't do.** It dilutes the signal and can surface you in searches you don't fit, which brings useless calls and drops your conversion rate.

**The rule:** if someone searched that category, could you do the job tomorrow? If not, drop it.

How to change it

From your profile, under edit, in the business category section. The change takes hours to days to appear.

If you've had the wrong category for a long time, the effect of changing can take a few weeks to settle. That's normal.

doubts

What people usually ask

How many secondaries should I add?

Two to five, all things you actually do. More than that rarely helps.

Can I have two primary categories?

No, only one. That's why you pick the one for the work you most want to receive.

I do several trades. What do I use?

The one that earns most, with the rest as secondaries. If they're genuinely separate businesses with separate locations, they can be split into two listings, but only with a real presence at each.

Does the category affect ads?

Ads are a separate system, but a well-categorized listing improves the experience for people arriving from them. For the free map placement it's decisive.

What if my trade has no exact category?

Pick the closest one from Google's list and put the specific service in the description and the services section. The category list is fixed, but the description is free text.
