Do you need a detailing license in Florida?

Car detailing needs no state license in Florida. What it does require is a local permit, and a rule about the water you use that almost nobody starting out knows about.

Updated 2026-08-22

What it takes to get started

The county business tax receipt (formerly called an occupational license) is the only thing the state requires, and it's issued at the county tax collector's office. If you work out of your home, you may also need a separate home-occupation permit, depending on the municipality.

The rule almost nobody knows about: wastewater

Florida's Department of Environmental Protection regulates how soapy runoff from washing a car gets disposed of, under the General Permit for Car Wash Systems. Letting that water run straight into a storm drain isn't just bad practice, it's an environmental violation.

This weighs more on mobile detailing than on a fixed-location shop, because every job happens in a different driveway, often with no water-capture system anywhere nearby.

If you also sell car care products

Selling waxes, cleaning products, or other items alongside the service can add separate permit requirements on top of the ones for just providing the service.

doubts

What people usually ask

Do I need a state license to wash cars in Florida?

No, there's no specific state license for this. The county permit is the only thing the state requires.

What do I do with the soapy water if I work mobile?

The correct move is to contain it rather than let it run into a storm drain. Some mobile detailers use water-recovery systems specifically because of this rule.

Does the permit change if I work from home instead of a shop?

Yes, many municipalities require a separate home-occupation permit on top of the business tax receipt, especially if you store equipment or vehicles on the property.
