What you can do without a contractor license

Swapping cabinets, painting, installing non-structural flooring, hanging a new door in the same opening: that's cosmetic work, and it falls under handyman or painter rules, each with its own $500 to $1,000 cap depending on the type of job.

What requires a general or building contractor license

Any remodel that touches a load-bearing wall, plumbing inside a wall, the electrical panel, or the HVAC system requires a license from Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), the same board that licenses general contractors.

Getting one usually takes four years of experience in the trade, passing both the trade exam and the business and finance exam, liability insurance, and, depending on the category, workers' compensation.

Why this line matters so much in remodeling

It's the trade where it's easiest to cross without noticing: a customer asks to "just knock down that wall to open up the kitchen," and that wall turns out to be load-bearing. Working without the license there isn't a paperwork slip, it's a crime in Florida, and the building permit can't be pulled in your name, so the inspection never happens and the customer finds out when they try to sell the house.

Working as an employee or subcontractor under someone else's license while you build the years of documented experience the board will ask for is the normal way into the trade.
